Insurance survey

Insurance survey

Postby hypnorm on Sat Dec 22, 2007 9:56 pm

We had to have a survey of our first boat for insurance purposes.
The guy came did the survey, after my husband read it he was furious.
There were obvious mistakes - battery box was stated as being plastic - um it was wooden.
Engine is in need of having a service engine oil dirty - husband had full serviced the engine the week previously and changed the oil. It was clear!!
oil filter is push on type - no it was screw on.

Then to top it all off we had left some fishing ground bait on board and we had some mice on during some flooding, the mice had gone through some holes in the wooden partitions (can think of the word i want) and they had eaten the ground bait - and it had swelled, the mice then went through the hole to go back out but got stuck in the holes and died. she surveyour took 4 photo of the mice... ummm what do dead mice have to do with the structure and saftey of the boat??

Also stated that the hull of the boat was full of osmosis without scraping back any of the anti fouling - just applying the probe to copper coat antifouling!!

(probably not explained it all very well) the surveyour never got paid! and asked for his survey back!

Makes you wonder were some of these people get their qualifications, I've noticed it's much the same with house surveys, more interested in the decoration than the fabric of the building. I've found the only way to get a decent house survey is to hire a structural engineer, cheaper than a surveyor too! Perhaps a marine engineer would be better than a marine surveyor? Must admit that I don't know much about marine surveyors though.

Dont forget...if you hire three surveyors to survey the same boat you will get three completely different reports. It's a fact.
